Wondering when your little one can start nursery? We answer the most common questions Leicester parents have about nursery start ages, settling-in, and what to look forward to.
1The Short Answer: Earlier Than You Might Think
At Hine Park Day Nursery in Leicester, we welcome children from as young as 8 weeks old. Many parents are surprised to learn that babies can start nursery so early, but with the right environment and dedicated care, it can be a wonderful experience for both child and parent.
2Is My Baby Ready for Nursery?
There is no single 'right age' to start nursery. Every child is unique. That said, most babies settle into a nursery routine well from around 3 to 6 months. At this age, babies are alert, responsive, and beginning to enjoy interaction with other faces. Signs your baby might be ready include holding their head confidently, tracking faces and sounds, and responding to familiar voices.
3The Benefits of Starting Early
Research consistently shows that high-quality early childcare supports brain development, language acquisition, and social skills. Babies who start nursery early often develop strong attachment to their key worker, build resilience, and become more confident as they grow. At Hine Park, every child under 12 months has a dedicated key person who supports their individual routine, including feeding, sleeping, and play.
4Settling-In: How We Make It Easy
We know that handing over your baby for the first time can feel daunting. That is why we offer a gradual settling-in process, where you visit together first, then build up to short solo sessions before transitioning to full days. Most babies settle within two to four weeks, and we keep you updated throughout with photos and notes via our online learning journal.
5Government Funding for Under-Twos
From April 2024, working parents of children from 9 months may qualify for 15 funded hours per week, expanding to 30 hours by September 2025. Speak to us directly and we will help you understand what you may be entitled to.
